Mission:

to highlight a built and artistic heritage

The house-workshop built in the International Style by the architect Alberto Sartoris in 1939 for the Swiss painters Italo and Vincent De Grandi was opened to the public in 2017 to host exhibitions, as well as conferences and concerts.

Around the works of the De Grandi brothers, this new museum space has set itself the mission of highlighting works by Swiss artists too rarely or never exhibited, even though they belong to our heritage.

Invited to Paris in 1935 by the French painter Jean Lurçat to contribute to the preparation of the 1937 Universal Exhibition, notably of mosaics for the Sèvres pavilion, the De Grandi brothers experienced working in workshops with high ceilings and lit by a large frosted glass roof to the north. Back in Vevey, they suggested to Alberto Sartoris - whom they had met during two group exhibitions at the Jenish Museum, in which they had participated in 1933 and 1938 - that they build a workshop in Corsica with such a glass roof and a minimal dwelling.

The project was completed in 1939. Subsequently, this house-workshop, inhabited by the d'Italo family, underwent two extensions, one in 1943 and the other in 1955, both approved by Alberto Sartoris.

Classified as a historical monument of regional importance, restored in 2005 and rented out until 2016, the house-workshop has changed its purpose on the initiative of the children of Italo to become a space made available to the public as an emblematic architectural object of the International Style on the Vaud Riviera, following the example of the Villa "Le Lac" Le Corbusier also located in Corseaux.

The painters Italo and Vincent De Grandi made a clear contribution to Switzerland's artistic heritage, while cultivating close links with various major players in regional cultural life, such as other painters, sculptors, architects, musicians and writers.

Like them, many painters, draftsmen, engravers or sculptors are never or too rarely exhibited. The public is therefore deprived of their works, even though they belong to our heritage.

This is why L'Atelier De Grandi has set itself the task of exhibiting not only the works of the De Grandi brothers, but also those of other Swiss artists.

Series of lectures and concerts enrich the cultural context of these exhibitions.
